Grand Final Weekend

4th Grade
Under heavy pressure from a very big and experienced Wanneroo forward pack the Nomads struggled to win any ball and, on the rare occasion they did win the ball, the rejigged Nomads backline, with Greg Levett, the hero of last week’s Elimination Final out for the rest of the season with a busted leg and with his halfback partner Tim Badham hobbling, was unable to demonstrate the slick attacking prowess that they showed the week before.

But despite these problems the spirit and will to win in the team was outstanding and somehow the boys manufactured three tries, the first a great individual effort by Nick ‘Maradona’ Daddona, the second, taken from close range after some wonderful passing interplay between the forwards, was the result of a typical bull like charge by Martin ‘Tank’ Tutt and the third a piece of pure opportunism and brilliant soccer skills by Tim ‘Hoppy’ Badham. Team goal kicker and new dad ‘Haydos’ Smith was back on the field, having missed last week’s game to be present at the birth, and a good thing too as he was not only able to convert one of the tries but also added a couple of penalties … and that was enough, when combined with an awesome defensive display that kept Wanneroo scoreless for long periods, including three times ‘held up’ over the Nedlands try line … to produce a narrow but characterful victory.

So the Nomads march into another Grand Final, their 6th in the last ten years. They will play the reigning premiers (UWA) at 2pm next Saturday at McGillivray Oval. It will be a repeat of last year’s Grand Final, which UWA won comfortably. UWA have won the 4th Grade Grand Final for four years in a row now and, as we saw up at Wanneroo last Saturday, they are already wearing team shirts that proclaim this as their ‘Michelle’ year (Michelle Pfeiffer … say it aloud and you will get it!). So clearly the Nomads have no chance of winning next week. But the boys will turn up anyway, as they have all season, and give it a real crack. Hopefully lots of the Neddies faithful will be there again next Saturday, as they were also at Wanneroo, to cheer the boys on!

5th Grade

The boys were unable to make it through to successive grand finals after losing to Associates with a last minute try. The final score was 16-13.
