Round 6 Review

DSC_0010Dents would be proud. With the Mike Denton Memorial Shield on the line, the Neddies premier grade team defied the wet and windy conditions down at The Foreshore on Saturday to turn on a dominant display against reigning premiers University.

The game didn’t go to script from the start, with the students registering first points with a runaway try. But once Neddies got in front after cult hero Joe “Peanut” Richie scored from a quick tap from halfback Mike “Roo” Ruru, the home team never relinquished the lead.

That early try gave Neddies a 10-7 edge at halftime after Davis Tavita had nailed a penalty goal and a conversion.

Davis was back in the thick of it in the second half, setting up Jesse Toto (whose namesake 1980s band is still Rocket Jones’s favourite) for a try and adding the extras to give Neddies a 17-7 buffer. A Uni penalty stirred some angst amongst the Third Half supporters, but Neddies stormed home with two late tries to Mike Egan and Jesse for a comfortable 29-10 bonus point victory to consolidate second spot on the log. Keeping the Mike Denton Memorial Shield meant plenty to Richie “Rat” Naylor, who left nothing on the paddock. Rat will have trouble containing himself this week with his beloved Highlanders due in town.

The win capped off victories in Thirds and Colts, who look to be building nicely on last year.

Saturday sees Neddies head to Harvey Field in Round 7 to take on arch rivals Cottesloe – hopefully in more accommodating weather conditions. Be there. GO NEDDIES!!
