Round 10 Review

Saturday saw Neddies head north to Kingsway to take on Wanneroo to kick-start the second round of the competition. By the time the premier grade had taken the field, Neddies had notched up wins in seconds and thirds – and the Crusaders had sent the Brumbies packing on a flight to South Africa. Warming the hearts of the Neddies faithful at Kingsway was the sight of two former premier grade stars making much-welcomed comebacks in Juan “JP” Pretorius and the winger who put the grease in lightning, Matt “Boots” Venter. The first half was nothing too inspiring as Neddies notched up a 20-0 lead, the feature of which was Danny Hartwell scoring his third try in as many weeks. The big fella obviously knows where the try line is. Joe “Peanut” Richie earned the bonus point when he scored under the posts early in the second half as Neddies threatened to rack up a big score. But the Roo Dogs hit back with two tries to peg the score back to 27-14. It was at this point one obviously nervous Third Half supporter was heard to enquire when it was the Roo Dogs last triumphed over Neddies. A subsequent search through the archives showed that occurred back in 2008, when Wanneroo inflicted Neddies biggest defeat of that season (23-43) in the semi-final at Perry Lakes to book a place in the grand final with Kalamunda. (Supplementary 2008 rugby trivia: the top try scorer in premier grade that season was Neddies star Garth “Ziggy” Ziegler with 22 meat pies. And like JP and Boots, Ziggy is also threatening a comeback). However, Neddies finished off the job with tries to Richie “Rat” Naylor (who was cruelly denied in the first half), Kauri Cudd (the artist formerly known as Gillies Kaka before having a haircut) and Jesse Toto for a final scoreline of 44-14. Another feature of the game was the number of colts players being given game time in premier grade, including Kauri, Tevin Ferris, Terrell Berryman and Sam Offer. Saturday sees a return to The Foreshore as Neddies host Kalamunda with the RugbyWA Cup on the line. Be there. Be proud. Be loud. GO NEDDIES!
