Given the weather, you would have been excused for thinking Saturday’s Round 13 fixture between Neddies and Soaks at The Foreshore would be a low-scoring affair. Then again, everyone thought the Canes were a shoo-in as well….
However, a total of 71 points were scored in the top-four clash as Neddies completed a clean sweep over Soaks. The 47-24 bonus point win in premier grade also kept Neddies at the top of the ladder and meant the RugbyWA Cup remained at The Foreshore.
Amid darkening skies, Neddies did enough damage in the first half to secure the bonus point after Davis Tavita had shredded the Soaks defence for a pair and Jermaine Ainsley and Jesse Toto added tries. Ian Prior showed Lima Sopoaga type accuracy with the boot to nail four from four as Neddies went to the sheds with a 28-5 advantage.
In the second half Andries “Drey” van der Westhuizen and Christian “Nase” Neihana scored before Soaks staged a third-quarter rally to bring the game back to 40-22. But in the end, it was a bit of Roo magic that sealed the game for Neddies as Mike Ruru set up Tevin Ferris for a try with one of his trademark electric breaks.
There was plenty to celebrate for Neddies over the afternoon, with the last-minute dropped goal by Hershelle Classen to seal the win for the colts one of the highlights.
Saturday sees Neddies hit the road to Pat O’Hara Reserve to take on Baysie in Round 14. Word is the RugbyWA Cup will also be making the trek north after the pre-requisite three successful home defences by Neddies. Bring it home boys.
Be there. Be loud. Be proud. GO NEDDIES!
