The answer is the ill-fated 2006 Grand Final against Wests at Perry Lakes. The question is when has Neddies ever lost so many key players to injury in rapid succession in a single match?
Nine years ago, it was Pek Cowan, Luke Holmes, Mark “Rocket” Davies and Garth “Ziggy” Ziegler who were all helped from the field for panel beating as Neddies suffered a heart-breaking 15-14 Grand Final loss to a Wests team headed by inspirational skipper Greg Plimmer.
On Saturday at McGillivray, it was skipper Joe “Peanut” Richie, fellow prop Jermaine Ainsley, start back David Tavita and second-rower Danny Hartwell who were struck with the injury curse in what was a dog-day afternoon for Neddies.
The signs were ominous for Neddies from the start when a Uni player intercepted a try-scoring pass to sprint the length of the field to give the reigning premiers a 7-0 lead.
Peanut then dragged Neddies back into the match with a couple of clutch plays. First he broke the Uni defence to put Dylan Loversidge over to level the scores and then he scored himself to give Neddies a 14-7 buffer. Despite the growing injury toll, Neddies managed to go to the break 19-7 up after Jesse Toto set up Kauri Cudd for the third try of the half.
The second half didn’t go to script. Uni kept chipping away at the score until things started looking a bit dangerous at 19-17. Another Uni penalty saw the home team edge in front by 20-19. And that was how things finished up at full time.
It was a costly loss for Neddies – relinquishing top spot to Wests and handing over both the RugbyWA Cup and the Mike Denton memorial trophy. Sometimes life’s like that.
Saturday sees Neddies return to The Foreshore to host a Cottesloe team desperate to stay in the hunt for the finals. Even Magnum is taping Coronation Street for that one.
Be there. Be loud. Be proud. GO NEDDIES!!
