Round 5 Match Report

20160430_170626Round 5 of the competition saw Neddies recapture the RugbyWA Cup in a top-shelf performance against Kalamunda at Hartfield Park.

Taking the field after wins in Colts, seconds and fourths, Neddies set the tone for the afternoon from the get-go, racing to a 26-0 lead within the first quarter after tries to star backs Mike “Roo” Ruru, Davis Tavita and another pair to Brody Lam.

It looked like a dog day afternoon for the Bulls. But to the home team’s credit, Kala hit back with two long-range converted tries to go to the break with at least a sniff at 26-14.

Any chance of a Kalamunda come-back was quickly snuffed out in the second spell as Neddies’ high-tempo attack resulted in a try to debutant winger LJ.

The scoring action continued throughout the second half as Neddies stunned the Bulls with further five-pointers to Drey (2) and Brody – completing his hat-trick and taking his tally for the season to 9 from just five games. By the time the referee had sounded full time, the scoreline had blown out to 52-19, making it one of the biggest wins by Neddies at Hartfield Park for many moons.

What’s more, the win was achieved without the likes of hooker Anaru Rangi and centre Ammon Matuauto, who were playing a different Bulls team at NIB stadium the previous evening.

The game marked the return of the Rat, with the recently wedded Richie Naylor getting his first taste of premier grade rugby for the season along with WA Under-20s lock Sam Offer, who is back from injury. Sam was actually one of four graduates from the Neddies Colts to feature in the second row on Saturday, joining the likes of Grayson Knapp, Drake Robson and Tui Williams, who had earlier made his junior coaching debut at Britannia Reserve with the Neddies under-12s Swan.

Round 6 sees Neddies return to The Foreshore to defend the diminutive RugbyWA Cup against Palmyra in what promises to be another exciting clash.
