Round 16 saw More wild weather as The Third Half faithful donned their thermals, beanies and wet-weather gear to watch Neddies take on Wanneroo at The Foreshore.
It was a game the premier grade was never going to take for granted, especially after a Ben Tapuai-inspired Roo Dogs outfit gave Dogga’s troops a tough outing at Kingsway earlier in the season.
However, once winger Brody Lam opened the scoring within a couple of minutes, it soon became evident that all the traffic was moving in the same lane, so to speak.
By half time, Neddies had clocked up a bonus point 33-0 advantage, with fellow backs Kauri Cudd (2), Ammon Matuauto and Juan “JP” Pretorius also crossing for tries.
There was one sight in particular at half time warming the hearts of huddled The Third Half supporters. And it wasn’t the mulled wine Magnum smuggled into the ground, or the Hurricanes touching up the Sharks on the big screen inside the club rooms.
Rather, it was the sight of backline star Davis “the Rock” Tavita limbering up in his Neddies kit after a long injury-induced stretch on the sideline.
And it didn’t take the Rock long to make his presence felt, scoring a try within a minute of his return to action.
By the final whistle, skipper Mike “Roo” Ruru had bagged a hat trick, Ammon had his second and livewire loose forward Tino Ruwhiu had added his name to the scorer’s list as Neddies cruised to a 71-0 victory.
Saturday sees Neddies back at The Foreshore to square the ledger against UWA. Make sure you get a leave pass to take in all the entertainment, including mouse racing (which Hulk will attempt to rig) and a DJ.
While Neddies is away to Soaks the following week in the last competition game of the season, the premier grade will back in action at The Foreshore on Sunday August 14 for the semi-finals. And for the record, that makes it 34 years of finals rugby for Neddies on the trot.
Finally, congratulations to Gore’s finest export, Grayson Knapp, for joining Neddies team mates Ammon, Roo and James Verity-Amm in the preliminary training group for the Perth Spirit team for the upcoming NRC.
The business end of the season is almost upon us. You gotta love it.
So be there. Be loud. Be proud. GO NEDDIES!!
