On behalf of the Board of Management I want to wish everyone in the Nedlands Rugby Family of players, coaches, supporters, volunteers, parents and followers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
2021 was a successful year and a big turn-around both on and off the field from what we experienced in 2020. And the only reason this happened was because of the amazing way Neddies people banded together to prove what an incredibly strong and resilient Club we are. To win 3 Minor Premierships and Senior Club Champion and for Reserves to win the Premiership are incredible achievements of which we should be proud. However this was only part of the story as a club needs to be working well to be winning, so well done to everyone.
Looking to the 2022 season I am once again excited about what is planned. We will field 5 senior teams again next season – Premiers, Reserves, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade and U21 Colts. Recruitment for 2022 is well underway and Neddies is again attracting some outstanding players. Good news is just about all of our recruits from 2021 will be playing at Neddies again so I believe our Prems and Reserves will be the best teams in the comp – again. Our mighty 3rds were minor premiers this year and I believe they will excel on the field once again. Our Colts and 4th Grade teams will build upon the amazing enthusiasm the guys developed in 2021, so I predict big things from both teams. We will also again try to establish a Womens team at the club with planning already in place.
We have a really strong coaching group overseeing our teams in 2022, and fantastically all bar one are past players and long term members of Neddies. Led by head coach Ra, we have Damo Elton, Keith Brady, Tony Ball, Amon Matuauto, Mason Pomare, Chris Naylor, Paul Badham, Mike Watts, Herschelle Classen and Jamie Hawgood. Luke Doherty rounds out the team as Director of Rugby.
Off-field a large number of volunteers are helping to drive the club forward with the committees formed this year continuing to manage such areas as sponsorship, social activities, the kitchen and merchandise. Kirk Kawana is VP Rugby on-field, and Josh Aislabie is our VP Clubhouse. Our new Treasurer this season is Natalie Lund so I trust you will all make her feel welcome. Steve Bradbury continues as our Secretary and we also welcome Paul Badham and Shane Smith onto the BOM as executive members. The Juniors will again be the envy of the Perth rugby community with Christine Lawrence as Junior President, and Richard Vaughan remains as the Neddies Patron. The bar will be humming with Lindy Dunn as our Bar Manager once again.
I strongly believe 2022 will be an incredible year for Neddies, a year where the stars align and our Club regains our powerhouse status on and off the field. I want everyone to be loud and proud to be part of the Neddies family and importantly to be actively involved in the continued rebuilding of our Club.
In closing out 2021 I want to thank all of the Club’s many players, coaches, supporters and volunteers in both the Seniors and Juniors for their tireless efforts and fantastic contributions over 2021. Neddies has always been one the strongest Clubs in the competition and this is something we must maintain.
Have a Great Christmas and I hope Santa pays you a visit. Enjoy yourselves over the holidays, be safe and I look forward to seeing you all in 2022.
President, Nedlands RUFC
