Nedlands Rugby

Located on the banks of the Swan River on the Nedlands Foreshore, Nedlands is one of the most succes

Ninety years ago this year – in 1934, the Nedlands Rugby Club was formed at a meeting in a tea rooms on Broadway Nedlands. In 2024, as the Club celebrates the 90th anniversary of its founding, its oldest active member, George Horsham also proudly turns 90.In 1957 this young man who started his footy career on the ovals of Kalgoorlie and then learned the rudiments of rugby playing league while living in rural NSW, was persuaded by a mate to come down to the Nedlands Foreshore and have a go at rugby union. He wasn’t a big bloke but a stint in the army and work as a driller had toughened him up so he agreed to go where most men fear to tread – into the front row. With help from Club coach Keith McDonald and encouragement from Club legend and Second Seconds’ WW2 hero Joe Poynton, George learned the “dark arts” and became a formidable opponent for the props in the Perth competition at that time. Under the leadership of Keith and Joe, the team developed well, and by the end of the season were good enough to win the Club’s second 1st grade premiership, beating WesternSuburbs 18-6 in a tense grand final played at Rosalie Park – Wests’ home ground.Shortly after that big game, George was called away to work in the bush, and apart from half a season with Neddies in 1963, he drifted away from the Club as his life took a different turn. It wasn’t until 2003, when then Club president Garry Ash organised a reunion lunch for the 1957 team, that George returned to the Foreshore. He immediately knew that he was home again, and with his mate from the 1957 team Ernie Probert, started attending Neddies games and supporting the Club in other ways. He became a familiar sight on the sideline supporting our boys through thick and thin, and although he is less mobile than he would like nowadays, his good mate Chris Ans has kindly driven him around Perth to watch the games. In recent years George has also been a great supporter of Nedlands’ Injured Players Fund.On Saturday 11/5 George will be guest of honour at a 90th anniversary lunch for Neddies’ supporter group The Third Half, and will no doubt be feted by many of the Club’s past players. Also in attendance at this lunch will be the five eighth from the 1957 team, Denis Beros, who at 93 and still an active golfer, makes George look like a mere slip of a lad.Well done to you both, and to Neddies! ... The Gary Mickle Cup is staying put for another year. Although it was a huge improvement from last years performance, it was trip to the Oasis we would like to forget. It was an ambush out at the hills, as our 13 Fourth Graders did it tough against Kalamunda. We look forward to seeing you all down at the Foreshore next weekend, as welcome Southern Lions across all grades. ... See MoreSee Less
